Watching videos online in video sharing sites is an easy thing to do. However, it’s a completely different story if you want to download and store those videos in PC. There are tons of software out there to help you do the job, but finding the right one can be difficult. Here, we have reviewed one of the best video catcher for satisfying all your video downloading needs: aTube Catcher.
- Supports downloading videos from video sharing sites like YouTube, Dailymotion and Metacafe
- Export downloaded videos to portable devices or computer
- Supports a wide range of format including MOV, 3GP, MP4 and MKV
- Built-in screen recorder for recording PC activities
- Built-in MP3 downloader with search options
- Video and audio cropping tool for resizing videos
- Built-in DVD/Blu-Ray and VCD creator with easy drag and drop support
- Simple, easy-to-use user interface
There are multiple download options in aTube Catcher’s official download page, but this is the only safe and fast link for downloading the software. When installing the software, you have to carefully avoid the third-party software included with it. It will try to install unwanted software like Ask Toolbar as shown in the picture below:
The installer is only 16.29MB in size and requires 55.6MB for installation. Even though the software is titled as aTube Catcher, it actually offers a suite of software that includes a built-in screen recorder, video converter, MP3 downloader, DVD/Blu-Ray/VCD Creator and video trimmer. All these tools are built-in and can be used immediately after installation.
The video downloader tool in aTube Catcher looks quite simple and user-friendly. Users just have to add the copied URL video, choose their preferred output profile and then click download. If the video is available in different quality (like 360p and 720p), it will let you choose the quality you prefer. The software also supports choosing multiple videos to download if the given link leads to a video playlist. The output profile is highly customizable and supports adding new exporting profile. The software offers a wide range of format as output option including WMV, AVI, XVID, MOV, VOB, MKV and MPG. Once you are done downloading videos, you can crop it, convert it or create a DVD/Blu-Ray or VCD right from the software.
Where it excels
aTube Catcher works as a complete package for managing videos instead of just a video catcher or downloader. You can record your PC activities, burn DVD, BluRay or CD, record audio, crop video files, convert any video and record streams which is more than you can ask for in a video downloader. The number of supported video format is huge so no complain there as well. Users can customize the frame rate, resolution, aspect ratio and other necessary option when downloading a video. Moreover, you get a free MP3 player and downloader as a bonus. The MP3 downloader managed to handle all my MP3 searches perfectly. It may not replace your current MP3 player, but you don’t have to open a separate software for playing the downloaded files.
Where it falls short
aTube Catcher offers more than you can ask for as a video downloader. However, it’s not flawless. Users have to be really careful when installing the software as there are about 3-4 bundled software to avoid. The software promises to support downloading videos from Dailymotion and Yahoo!, but it didn’t work when I tried. To record stream using the Stream Catcher, you have to download WinpCap 4.0 separately. The tool is also supposed to offer a video search tool but it didn’t show up when I clicked on the “Video Search Tool” button.
Overall, aTube Catcher is a nice tool with room for improvement which is keeping it from becoming the ultimate video downloading solution.
Freemake Video Downloader is a great alternative to aTube Catcher. Unlike aTube Catcher, the software managed to download videos from Facebook and Dailymotion. It promises to support downloading videos from over 10,000 websites. The software did manage to download videos from most of the website thrown at it. While it doesn’t really offer a wide range of output format like aTube Catcher, it’s definitely good enough for those who are just looking for a simple software. For those who are looking for just a simple video downloader, check out Freemake Video Downloader. However, don’t forget to uncheck the bundled software when installing it.
Video DownloadHelper is slightly different from the last two software. It’s a plugin for Firefox that can help you to download video files right from your browser. Users don’t have to install any software separately as it’s a plugin for Firefox. You can either copy the link or let the plugin download the video for you. The plugin worked perfectly in popular sites like Facebook, DailyMotion, Google Videos and MySpace. However, users may face some issues when using it on Firefox 32. Video DownloadHelper didn’t work in YouTube which is slightly disappointing. It’s a good choice for those who are not eager to install a separate software only for downloading videos.
